Traces of the emerald ash borer on the trunk of a dead ash tree under the bark. The emerald ash borer is a non-native invasive insect that threatens to kill most of the ash trees in North America.

Emerald Ash Borer -
What is it ?

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a small green beetle that arrived in the USA in the summer of 2002. By 2018, it was in 35 states plus Canada with no way to stop it. Similar to Dutch elm disease, Emerald ash borer is expected to wipe out most ash trees nationwide with hundreds of millions gone so far. Here in Missouri EAB has cost municipalities and home owners dearly. Cities have spent millions to remove all ash trees before they become public health dangers. Once infested, ash trees gradually lose leaves then limbs which damage property, cars, homes, etc. and at a minimum causing a recurring mess. Various chemical treatments are available but here in Missouri once an ash tree has lost more than a third of its leaves it's typically beyond the point of no return. Multi-year nationwide studies have shown that if more than 50% of the canopy has been killed off it's time for action.

What You Can Do

Ash trees come in many shapes, sizes and locations. If you have a big beautiful ash tree in a prime position that has yet to be infested you can explore chemical treatments. They are expensive and need to be renewed annually but if a tree is caught early it can often be saved. If your ash tree is already in decline, especially if it's near home or driveway or anywhere children play, for safety reasons an early removal is typically recommended. Besides safety, this stops the growing shower of debris which recurs on the lawn/property. An early removal also reduces cost - a partially healthy tree offers many options for arborists removing it while a severely impacted tree is much more costly to dismantle.

St. Louis County solutions

Most cities in St. Louis County have removed all their ash trees from all public lands including parks and sidewalks. Homeowners have largely followed suit with the exceptions of large prime placement trees that were put on a chemical treatment program years back. If caught early ash tree removals can be relatively quick and efficient.

While we are in favor of saving any tree where it's feasible, we are also efficient at removals, if that's the homeowners decision. For a free consultation and honest assessment on an ash tree, call Wildwood Tree Service at 636-207-8000.
